As some of you know, Startup Nanaimo came into existence after a Reading Circle on the book “Startup Communities” by Brad Feld. In the Fall of 2013, over 10 organizations, students and entrepreneurs came together to read “Startup Communities” and how we can transform Nanaimo into a Startup Community together. At the reading circle wrap-up event, we applied to Startup Canada to be one of the 18 other Startup Communities at the time. Nanaimo was accepted as the only other BC Community to join Startup Canada in 2014, and we were ecstatic by the amount of community support to build and grow the startup ecosystem of Nanaimo!
Since Startup Nanaimo’s inception, we have held 3 Reading Circles. With each Reading Circle comes a blend of new and returning members looking to network, collaborate, create, and transform ideas into action. Our take-aways from each book do not go back onto the bookshelf – they get transformed into action to make an impact in our community. The Reading Circle has been used by other Startup Communities across Canada in Prince George, Sault Ste Marie, and other communities. Because of this impact, we were invited to present at the University of British Columbia Okanagan Campus the Impact of the Reading Circle on Students and the Community at the Teaching and Learning Conference in Kelowna.
